In the early hours of June 12, a devastating fire in Kuwait erupted in a six-story residential building in the Mangaf area of Kuwait’s southern Ahmadi Governorate. The fire, which started in the kitchen on the ground floor, quickly spread throughout the building, which housed nearly 160 workers of the same company. Major General Eid Al-Owaihan, director of the General Department of Criminal Evidence, reported that the victims primarily succumbed to smoke inhalation. Forensic teams have so far identified three bodies.

Kuwait’s Interior Minister, Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousuf Al-Sabah, responded swiftly by ordering the detention of the building’s janitor, owner, and the company owner pending a thorough investigation. At the scene, Sheikh Fahad remarked, “What happened today is a result of the greed of the company and building owners,” condemning the practice of cramming large numbers of workers into inadequate living spaces.

India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, expressed deep shock and sorrow over the incident. “Deeply shocked by the news of the fire incident in Kuwait City. There are reportedly over 40 deaths and over 50 have been hospitalized. Our Ambassador has gone to the camp. We are awaiting further information,” he said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The Indian Embassy in Kuwait has established an emergency helpline (+965-65505246) to assist those affected by the tragedy and has committed to providing all necessary support to the victims and their families. Indians constitute 21% of Kuwait’s population and 30% of its labour force, making the impact of this disaster particularly profound within the Indian community.

The fire has sparked outrage and calls for immediate reforms to ensure the safety of migrant workers. Kuwait’s Deputy Prime Minister criticized real estate owners for violations driven by greed, which contributed to the tragedy. Sheikh Fahad announced that the Kuwait Municipality and the Public Authority for Manpower would undertake immediate measures to address safety violations in similar residential buildings.
