In a worrying global health development, Pakistan has confirmed its first case of the mpox virus (formerly known as monkeypox).

Detected in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, this case places Pakistan as the second country outside Africa to experience this outbreak.

With over 14,000 cases reported worldwide and 527 deaths in 2024 alone, the World Health Organization has declared mpox a global health emergency.

The virus spreads through close contact, contaminated surfaces, and respiratory droplets, raising concerns about its further transmission.

Pakistan is now ramping up efforts, including contact tracing, airport screenings, and public health awareness campaigns, to contain the virus.
