Liverpool vs Atalanta Europa League Quarter Final 1st Leg

Liverpool’s journey in the Europa League took a surprising twist after a disappointing loss to Atalanta at their iconic Anfield fortress. This unexpected result in the first leg of the quarter-finals has definitely shifted the momentum towards the Italian side as they gear up for the crucial return leg in Bergamo.

The stage was set for an electrifying showdown at Anfield, known for its magical European nights. But to everyone’s surprise, the game unfolded in an entirely different manner, with former West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca stealing the spotlight. Scamacca netted twice, first capitalizing on a blunder from Liverpool’s goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher in the 38th minute, and then securing his brace with a clinical finish in the 60th minute.

84′ GOAL! Liverpool 0-3 Atalanta. Pasalic scores a phenomenal goal.

End of 2nd Half!

Adding insult to injury, Mario Pasalic, another familiar face from the Premier League, deepened Liverpool’s despair with a third goal in the 83rd minute. His strike came off a rebound from Kelleher’s save, leaving the Croatian midfielder to bury it, firmly solidifying Atalanta’s commanding lead ahead of the second leg.
Liverpool’s performance was surprisingly lackluster, marked by missed opportunities and a noticeable lack of urgency. Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott came agonizingly close, with Nunez squandering two golden chances and Elliott unlucky to hit the crossbar. Mohamed Salah brought on as a substitute, injected some energy into Liverpool’s attack, forcing a remarkable save from Atalanta’s Juan Musso and having a goal disallowed for offside.

The defensive shortcomings proved costly for the Reds. Scamacca’s second goal perfectly highlighted their defensive disarray, as he found himself unmarked to double Atalanta’s advantage. The combination of defensive vulnerabilities and an overall subdued team performance left manager Jurgen Klopp visibly baffled and disappointed as the final whistle blew.

As both teams prepare for the decisive second leg in Italy, Atalanta now find themselves as strong favorites to progress to the semi-finals, where they would potentially face either Benfica or Marseille. However, for Liverpool, while the challenge appears daunting, it’s certainly not insurmountable. The Reds must dig deep, rediscover their form, and summon their fighting spirit to overturn the deficit and keep their European dreams alive.

Atalanta dominates Liverpool in Europa League as Bayer Leverkusen trounces West Ham.

Bayer Leverkusen vs West Ham Europa Quarter Final 1st Leg

Bayer Leverkusen extended their unbeaten streak to a remarkable 42 games this season, securing a 2-0 victory over West Ham with two late goals.

Despite a positive start from the Irons, it was Leverkusen‘s Patrik Schick who had the first notable chance, attempting a cheeky back heel finish that was well saved by Lukasz Fabianski.
As expected, Leverkusen gradually took control of possession, with Florian Wirtz creating four chances within the first 30 minutes, three more than the entire West Ham team managed.

Despite West Ham‘s resilience, particularly evident before and after halftime despite limited possession and few chances, it was Fabianski’s save from Schick that truly stood out. With just seven minutes remaining, Leverkusen finally broke the deadlock. West Ham failed to deal with a corner, allowing Jonas Hofmann’s somewhat weak volley to find its way past several defenders and into the net.

In added time, Leverkusen secured their victory with a second goal. After numerous attempts on goal, Hofmann’s cross found Victor Boniface, who made no mistake in doubling Leverkusen’s lead.

With this late surge, Leverkusen now find themselves as overwhelming favorites to progress to the next round at the London Stadium next week, under the astute leadership of Xabi Alonso in what can only be described as a dream season for the German side.
