Foxconn Chairman Young Liu is set to visit India this year. This visit follows Liu’s recent receipt of the prestigious Padma Bhushan Award.
In a move that underscores the strengthening economic ties between India and Taiwan, Foxconn Chairman Young Liu is set to visit India this year. This visit follows Liu’s recent receipt of the prestigious Padma Bhushan Award, recognizing his contributions to the Indian economy through Foxconn’s substantial investments. Liu’s visit is poised to further Foxconn’s expansive growth in India, a market where the company has already invested heavily in manufacturing and technology sectors.
Foxconn, the world’s largest electronics manufacturer and a key supplier for Apple has significantly ramped up its investments in India over the years. The company’s total investment in the country is estimated to be in the range of USD 9-10 billion. This substantial financial commitment highlights Foxconn’s strategy to diversify its manufacturing base and reduce dependency on China, aligning with Apple’s ‘China Plus One’ strategy.
Young Liu’s Padma Bhushan Award
On July 4, Young Liu received the Padma Bhushan Award from India Taipei Association Director General Manharsinh Yadav at a ceremony in Taipei. The Padma Bhushan is the third highest civilian award in India, and Liu was honored on the eve of the 75th Republic Day. In his acceptance speech, Liu expressed his gratitude and emphasized the collaborative efforts between Foxconn and India to boost local economies.
“I am humbled to receive the award. I also want to say I am privileged to accept this award on behalf of all the fine women and men who work to do our part in growing local economies in India,” Liu stated. “I look forward to meeting Madam President in India this year.”
Expanding Manufacturing Footprint
Foxconn’s journey in India began in 2006 with its entry as a manufacturer for Nokia in Tamil Nadu. Since then, the company has expanded its footprint significantly, making India a pivotal hub for its global manufacturing operations. Foxconn’s subsidiaries, such as FIH Mobile, have established multiple facilities across the country, contributing to both export and domestic markets.
One of the major highlights of Foxconn’s expansion is its role in Apple’s iPhone production. Currently, Foxconn’s iPhone manufacturing in India accounts for a significant portion of the global shipments. The company is also planning to expand its iPhone production facility further, which will not only boost its manufacturing capabilities but also create numerous job opportunities in the region.
Beyond smartphones, Foxconn is diversifying its investments in India. The company is setting up a chip plant in a joint venture with the HCL Group and establishing an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing unit and Apple AirPods production facilities. These ventures are part of Foxconn’s broader strategy to make India a key player in its global supply chain.
In Karnataka, Foxconn Industrial Internet (FII) has committed Rs 8,800 crore, and Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development (FHH) has an investment project worth Rs 8,000 crore. Additionally, in Tamil Nadu, Foxconn has invested Rs 1,600 crore in a mobile component manufacturing unit and is increasing the workforce at its Sriperumbudur facility from 15,000 to 18,000 employees.
Despite these successes, Foxconn’s journey in India has not been without challenges. The company faced a significant setback when it had to wind up operations in Chennai following Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia in 2014. However, Foxconn quickly rebounded by re-establishing its presence as an Apple manufacturer, demonstrating resilience and adaptability.
Significance of the Padma Bhushan Award
Analysts view the Padma Bhushan award conferred on Young Liu as a testament to Foxconn’s significant contributions to the Indian economy. The award not only recognizes Liu’s leadership but also highlights the strategic importance of Foxconn’s investments in India. With plans to make India its third global hub for EV contract manufacturing, Foxconn is poised to play a crucial role in India’s economic growth and technological advancement.
Geopolitics has also influenced Foxconn’s expansion in India. As global companies seek to diversify their supply chains amid geopolitical tensions, India has emerged as a favorable destination for manufacturing investments. Foxconn’s increased focus on India aligns with this trend, positioning the country as a key player in the global electronics and technology sectors.
Summary
Foxconn Chairman Young Liu’s upcoming visit to India marks a significant milestone in the company’s long-term commitment to the Indian market. With substantial investments across various sectors and a vision to enhance local economies, Foxconn is set to play a pivotal role in India’s manufacturing and technological landscape. Liu’s receipt of the Padma Bhushan Award further cements the strong ties between Foxconn and India, promising a future of continued collaboration and growth.
