What does Dry ice mean and what is its usability?

Upon admission to the healthcare facility, the doctor who was treating the victims of Gurugram incident, informed them that the food they had consumed was, in fact, dry ice. This is carbon dioxide in its solid state. It functions as a coolant. These days, Dry ice is employed in the food and medical industries. It is not composed of water and resembles dry ice exactly. Although it is really helpful, it is also very risky. The unique quality of dry ice is how cold it is.

If basic homemade ice is taken into consideration, its temperature ranges from minus 2 to 3 degree celsius. However, in case of dry ice, its temperature usually reaches upto minus 80 degrees. Basically dry ice doesn’t seem as wet as typical regular ice. One must have observed that regular ice melts and becomes water as soon as it gets hot, but dry ice does not behave this way. When the temperature rises, it becomes smoke and begins to fly instead of melting. It originates at an approximate temperature of -78.5°C (-109.3°F), and under normal air pressure, it transforms straight from a solid into a gaseous state. Dry ice functions as a coolant.

Several items like Ice cream, meat, dairy goods, and other items are kept cool with the use of dry ice. It keeps food fresh and stops spoiling. The medical industry also makes use of it. Tissues, blood, and medications are kept cool with its help in the medical industry. It is deemed very harmful by various key agencies including the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

Why Dry Ice is so dangerous?

The above mentioned agencies’ guidelines state that dry ice should never be handled, not even with gloves on, due to its rapid reaction. It is not recommended to use it in a closed space as the corrosion (melting) could cause the room’s carbon dioxide content to spike unexpectedly, possibly leading to someone’s death. Even in locations where food is processed, the usage of dry ice and liquid nitrogen is prohibited in the United States. Dry ice can only be utilized in places without appliances like refrigerators where it is necessary to use it to keep the contents cool.
