Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan, has been selected as India’s official entry for the 2025 Academy Awards.
India has chosen its contender for the 97th Academy Awards, and it’s a film that beautifully balances humor and social commentary. Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao and co-produced by Aamir Khan, has emerged as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025. The film was selected from a competitive lineup of 29 entries, surpassing high-profile films such as Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal, Kartik Aaryan’s Chandu Champion, and Prabhas’s Kalki 2898 AD.
A Unique Tale of Women Empowerment
Set in the rural heartland of India in 2001, Laapataa Ladies brings forth a humorous yet poignant narrative about two newlywed brides who accidentally get swapped during a train journey to their husbands’ homes. The film’s storyline, while rooted in comedy, is a satirical exploration of patriarchy and the cultural expectations placed on women in India’s traditional societies. Through the lens of humor, Kiran Rao skillfully portrays the restrictive gender roles, highlighting the resilience of women in such constrained environments.
The film stars Nitanshi Goel and Pratibha Ranta as the two brides, while Sparsh Shrivastava plays the confused husband who unwittingly brings home the wrong bride. Supported by actors Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, and Geeta Aggarwal Sharma, the ensemble cast brings the story to life in a village setting in Madhya Pradesh.
Kiran Rao’s Vision
For Kiran Rao, Laapataa Ladies is more than just a film—it’s a personal journey. The story was initially shared with her by her ex-husband Aamir Khan, who had come across the plot during a screenwriting competition he was judging. “Aamir came home and told me a one-liner, about two girls on a train and how they get swapped. I was hooked immediately,” Kiran said in an interview.
Rao, who is known for her distinctive storytelling style, saw this as a perfect opportunity to explore a narrative that wasn’t naturally hers. “Honestly, I could never have written a story like this myself. But I felt I could bring something of myself to it,” she shared. The film is a reflection of Rao’s knack for combining lightheartedness with deeper societal issues, making it an engaging yet thought-provoking cinematic experience.
Competition for India’s Oscar Entry
Selecting India’s official entry to the Oscars is no easy task, and Laapataa Ladies had to face stiff competition from other notable films. The selection committee, headed by acclaimed filmmaker Jahnu Barua, considered 29 films in total, including Animal, Kalki 2898 AD, Sam Bahadur, Aattam (the National Award-winning Malayalam film), and All We Imagine as Light, the Cannes Film Festival winner.
Among the other entries were regional films like Maharaja (Tamil), Hanu-Man (Telugu), and Aadujeevitham (Malayalam), all strong contenders in their own right. However, Laapataa Ladies stood out due to its unique narrative and satirical take on patriarchy, a theme that resonates with global audiences.
The 13-member jury unanimously selected Laapataa Ladies as India’s official entry, recognizing its artistic merit and social relevance. In response to the announcement, Kiran Rao expressed her gratitude, saying, “This recognition is a testament to the tireless work of my entire team, whose dedication and passion brought this story to life. I hope the film will resonate with audiences worldwide, just as it has in India.”
Empowerment Through Cinema
At its core, Laapataa Ladies is a story about gender dynamics and women empowerment, set in a time when mobile phones were still a rarity in rural India. The film captures the essence of how women navigate societal norms, often in creative and resilient ways. It offers a glimpse into the lives of women who are bound by tradition but still manage to assert their identity and autonomy.
Indian cinema has long been a medium for exploring social issues, and Laapataa Ladies continues this tradition by using satire to shine a light on the complex gender dynamics in rural India. The film challenges the audience to question the roles that women are expected to play within the confines of tradition, and how these roles often reduce women to faceless entities, hidden behind veils or the expectations of others.
In her review of the film, Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta aptly described it as a commentary on “patriarchy 101,” where women learn to “adjust” to the system while finding small ways to assert their independence. The film’s portrayal of the newlywed brides, hidden behind veils, is a stark reminder of the many ways women have had to conform to the expectations placed upon them.
India’s Journey to the Oscars
Laapataa Ladies is now set to represent India at the 97th Academy Awards, vying for a spot in the Best International Feature Film category. While India has had mixed success at the Oscars in the past, there is renewed hope that Laapataa Ladies could follow in the footsteps of past Indian successes. Notably, Lagaan (also produced by Aamir Khan) made it to the final shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards in 2001.
India’s track record at the Oscars saw a major victory at the 95th edition, where Naatu Naatu from RRR won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Additionally, The Elephant Whisperers won in the Best Documentary (Short) category, while All That Breathes was a finalist in the Best Documentary Feature category. With Laapataa Ladies, there is renewed optimism that Indian cinema can continue to make waves on the international stage.
In Short!
With its compelling narrative, strong performances, and satirical take on patriarchy, Laapataa Ladies is a film that holds the potential to make a significant impact on global audiences. Kiran Rao’s direction, coupled with Aamir Khan’s production expertise, has created a film that not only entertains but also sparks meaningful conversations about gender equality and the role of women in society. As India’s official entry for Oscars 2025, Laapataa Ladies is poised to shine on the world stage, bringing a powerful message from the heart of rural India to the global audience.
The journey to the Oscars has just begun, and all eyes will be on Laapataa Ladies as it embarks on this prestigious journey.
