Vineet Nayyar passes away at 85, Ex-Tech Mahindra Vice Chairman and a Visionary Leader!
Renowned businessman Vineet Nayyar, the former executive vice chairman of Tech Mahindra, passed away on Thursday at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy that resonates deeply within the business community. The Mahindra Group expressed their profound sorrow on ‘X’, stating, “It is with immense sadness that we mourn the passing of a titan in the Mahindra Group family, Vineet Nayyar. Known for his statesmanship, sharp business acumen, and dedication to society, his departure is a tremendous loss for all of us.
The post continued, offering condolences to Nayyar’s family during this difficult time. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Though he is no longer with us, his values will forever guide us and inspire us to strive for excellence,” it read, capturing the essence of Nayyar’s enduring impact on the company and its people. Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, shared a heartfelt tribute, referring to Nayyar as a towering figure in the Indian business landscape and reflecting on his remarkable journey filled with numerous achievements.
“He was more than just a colleague; he was a friend,” Mahindra wrote. “His career, marked by distinction and dedication, is a testament to his extraordinary capabilities and relentless pursuit of excellence.”Nayyar’s career began in the esteemed Indian Administrative Service (IAS) before he went on to make significant contributions to the World Bank. His leadership was evident early on when he became the inaugural Chairman of the state-owned energy corporation GAIL.
Once he assumed positions like vice chairman of HCL Technologies Limited as well as Managing Director of HCL Corporation Limited, his career trajectory kept rising. Anand Mahindra narrated, “It was from HCL that Vineet, along with two of his close colleagues, ventured to Mahindra British Telecom. We fondly referred to them as the Three Musketeers! They approached MBT (later renamed Tech Mahindra) with a startup mentality, driven by a vision to elevate it to the upper echelons of the Indian IT industry—and that’s precisely what they achieved.

The National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) acknowledged his contributions in a poignant message, stating, “We will always remember the significant contributions of Vineet Nayyar, former executive vice chairman of Tech Mahindra.
His unwavering commitment and imaginative leadership have made a lasting impression on the sector. We send our sincere sympathies to his friends, family, and coworkers. His accomplishments and influence have left a long-lasting legacy.” India has lost one of its finest leaders today, according to CP Gurnani, the former MD and CEO of Tech Mahindra, who also shared his personal sorrow. For me, it’s like losing the light that has guided me for decades. Vineet was a friend, philosopher, brother, guide, and statesman par excellence. My heart and thoughts are with Reva and his family.
Mohit Joshi, the current MD and CEO of Tech Mahindra, also shared his sentiments, emphasizing Nayyar’s foundational contributions to the company. “Quite saddened to hear about the passing of the legendary Vineet Nayyar. As an institution builder, Vineet’s contributions were foundational, and his ambitious vision will continue to guide us,” he noted. Nayyar’s career is a remarkable tale of dedication and excellence. Starting as an IAS officer, he moved on to play pivotal roles in various significant organizations. His time at the World Bank was marked by impactful contributions that further honed his skills and broadened his perspective on global business practices.
His leadership at GAIL set new benchmarks for state-owned enterprises, and his tenure at HCL Corporation and HCL Technologies further cemented his reputation as a transformative leader. When he joined Mahindra British Telecom, his vision and strategy were instrumental in its rebranding to Tech Mahindra, a name now synonymous with innovation and excellence in the IT industry.
