Bus Accident in Jammu and Kashmir Results in at least 21 Fatalities and 40 Injuries!
A devastating bus accident in Jammu has claimed the lives of at least 21 pilgrims and left 40 others injured. The tragic incident occurred on May 30 at Tangli Morh in the Choki Chora region of the district. The ill-fated bus, carrying pilgrims from Haryana’s Kurukshetra to the revered Shiv Khori shrine in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, plunged approximately 150 feet down a steep gorge.
Officials reported that the accident unfolded as the bus was navigating a blind curve. Witnesses and injured passengers recounted the harrowing moments leading up to the crash. Amar Chand, one of the survivors, described how a speeding car coming from the opposite direction forced the bus driver into a perilous maneuver. “A car was coming from the opposite direction. The driver tried to negotiate a blind curve but failed, resulting in the vehicle rolling down into the gorge,” Chand said from his hospital bed.
In the wake of the accident, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of life. “The bus accident in Akhnoor is heart-rending. I condole the loss of lives and pray to the almighty to give the bereaved families the strength to bear the irreparable loss. Praying for a speedy recovery of the injured. The administration is providing all possible assistance to the bereaved families and is also extending medical facilities to those who have been injured,” Sinha stated.

Emergency response teams swiftly moved into action following the accident. The bodies of the deceased were transported to the Sub District Hospital (SDH) in Akhnoor, while the injured were initially taken to the Akhnoor hospital. Given the severity of their injuries, 36 passengers, including six in critical condition, were later transferred to the Government Medical College (GMC) hospital in Jammu.
Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, principal of the GMC hospital, provided an update on the condition of the injured. “More than 36 passengers have been brought to the GMC hospital. Six of them are in a critical condition. Timely treatment is being given to the patients,” Dr. Gupta assured. Medical teams are working tirelessly to provide the necessary care to the injured, many of whom are grappling with severe trauma and critical injuries.
The pilgrimage to Shiv Khori, a popular destination for devotees of Lord Shiva, had drawn these pilgrims from Kurukshetra, Haryana. The serene journey turned tragic, casting a pall of sorrow over the families and communities of the victims.
As investigations continue, authorities are keen to determine the exact causes of the accident. Early reports indicate that the combination of a blind curve and oncoming traffic played a significant role. The road conditions and the driver’s actions in those crucial moments are under scrutiny to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The local administration, alongside the police and rescue teams, has been lauded for their prompt response. The timely evacuation of the injured and the swift transfer of critically injured patients to advanced medical facilities were critical in managing the aftermath of the accident.
In the midst of this tragedy, the community has come together in an outpouring of support for the victims and their families. Volunteers and local residents have been assisting in various capacities, providing comfort and aid to those affected.
This incident underscores the urgent need for improved road safety measures, especially in hilly terrains where blind curves and steep gorges pose significant risks. Enhanced driver training, stricter traffic regulations, and improved road infrastructure could mitigate the likelihood of such devastating accidents.
As the victims’ families mourn their profound losses, the entire nation stands in solidarity with them. The memory of this tragic accident serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safety on our roads. The resilience and compassion demonstrated by the community and authorities will hopefully provide some solace as they navigate through this difficult time.
